A man and a woman call at Dr. Courbet's surgery in a small town in the south of France. The man has a deep knife wound which he says was caused by a tree branch while he was turning his car.
The doctor dresses the wound. He notices that the woman is carrying an attaché case which resembles one belonging to a rich neighbour and comments on it. He writes out a prescription for a painkiller. Then the man knocks him out, and they tie and gag him and put him in a cupboard in case he calls the police. Will they get away with it?
